In the bustling streets of contemporary Lagos, among yellow danfo buses, humming generators, and the endless rhythm of neighbourhood life, stands Wale—popularly known as Egbon Wale. In his late thirties to early forties, Wale has no formal office, no registered business address, and no monthly payslip. Yet as the community’s recognized Egbon Adugbo (“older brother of the street”), he commands an invisible currency woven from personal favours, street wisdom, Yoruba proverbs, and an unyielding social network.
Wale is a walking contradiction. He is financially irresponsible, shamelessly dishonest when a good cause requires a clever lie, and utterly incapable of minding his own business. Yet when vulnerable neighbours face exploitation or ruin, Wale is the man who invariably shows up.
